Why Study Diploma of Civil Construction Design?
The Diploma of Civil Construction Design builds foundation skills in civil design, technical mathematics, CAD/BIM, engineering mechanics, drainage, foundations, and concrete and steel design. This course suits students who want to develop practical drafting and civil design skills for technical support roles within the civil construction and infrastructure sector.
Students who complete all Diploma requirements may exit with the RII50520 Diploma of Civil Construction Design. The Diploma may also form Stage 1 of the packaged Diploma and Advanced Diploma pathway submitted for Engineers Australia accreditation.
The Diploma includes approved Industry Exposure Days that may contribute towards the packaged Diploma and Advanced Diploma pathway if the student continues into the approved pathway. For eligible students, this training is delivered with South Australian Government funding. Upon successful completion, participants will be issued a Diploma of Civil Construction Design by Alliance College (RTO: 0137).
Learning Outcomes
Students will develop skills to:
Develop foundational civil construction design knowledge and technical drafting capabilities.
Produce and interpret basic civil design drawings, models, and technical documentation.
Apply mathematics, data, and engineering principles to civil construction design problems.

Industry Exposure Days
Industry Exposure Days are structured professional practice activities designed to help students connect classroom learning with civil construction design practice. Activities may include industry excursions, guest speakers, practical training days, engineering reflection reports, additional unit activities, site-based learning, simulated workplace activities and capstone-related professional practice tasks.
Students must accumulate evidence for at least 30 approved Industry Exposure Days across the program. Attendance, punctuality and professional behaviour are important because students are representing Alliance College during industry activities.
Entry Requirements
- To be eligible for a government-subsidised training place in this course, you must live or work in South Australia and be:
- An Australian or New Zealand citizen; OR
- A permanent Australian resident; OR
Academic Entry Requirement:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have satisfactory completion of Year 12 or AQF Level 5 or equivalent
- Meet the English language entry requirement of IELTS 6.0 overall or approved equivalent
- Complete the Alliance College LLND assessment or approved equivalent
- Participate in a suitability interview
- A mathematics background is recommended because the course includes technical mathematics, engineering mechanics, CAD/BIM and design calculations.
- Please note: Eligibility for a subsidised place may be subject to an assessment of your previous qualifications and current training status. Contact our Admissions Team to start your Upfront Assessment of Need (UAN).
Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer:
- RPL and CT may be requested for this qualification. Approval is not automatic and each application is assessed against Alliance College policy, course requirements and available evidence
- For this qualification, RPL/CT applications can only be considered for units listed in the Alliance College course structure.
- The number of RPL/CT units granted is capped at 50%, which is 10 units for this qualification, to support Stage 1 requirements of the packaged pathway submitted for Engineers Australia accreditation

- Internet access for Moodle, Teams and online learning systems
- Mac computers and iPads are not suitable for this course because CAD/BIM software may not operate correctly
- Laptop Mouse with a clickable scroll wheel (optional extra two thumb programable buttons)
- Alliance College provides access to Microsoft Office and Autodesk software.
General Requirements:
- This course does not include a traditional work placement. Students complete structured Industry Exposure Days, which may include excursions, guest speakers, practical training days, site-based learning, reflection tasks and simulated workplace activities
- Students are required to complete evidence for approved Industry Exposure Days as part of the Diploma program
- White Card training is included where required if the student does not already hold it
