How I Became A Manager of Three Successful Hospitality Venues in Australia
Restaurant manager is a dream job for many people. It’s also a challenging job because it is a mixture of culinary art and creativity. It is said that it’s easy to enter the hospitality industry, but it’s not easy to go all the way to becoming a restaurant manager. On the way to becoming a successful restaurant manager, it’s more complicated than truly mastering basic hospitality skills, you have to grasp basic management skills and gain experience from the very beginning.
Alliance College can help to build your way to get there. We have numerous courses such as Diploma of Hospitality Management and Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management, both in Adelaide and Sydney campuses, which can bring opportunities for those who have management ambitions.
Many graduates from Alliance College find their way to become restaurant managers, like one of our graduates, Xiaoli, who graduated from Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management, and now is managing one restaurant and two bars in Adelaide CBD.

“I can say that I’m the lucky one to be picked to become a restaurant manager. I first started as a dishwasher, and I wanted to show my parents I have the ability to earn some money. Eventually, I had a chance to become a shop manager, but I was too young, and l didn’t have much experience, so I didn’t take the opportunity. ”
“During the time when I was studying at Alliance College last year, my trainers gave me great inspiration and taught me a lot to become a restaurant manager.”

Xiaoli said all the skills she learned at the college have become the fortune to establish her career path.
“I remember the training at the Alliance College function, Oui Chef. The way they operate is something I learned quite a lot about. The most important thing I learned is debriefing as a waitress. Firstly, after the service, you’ll have a briefing about what you did and learned today, then debrief about the points you’ve learned and think about how to improve them next time. At the functions, I also learned how to talk to the staff like the way the trainers treat their staff and students, if they have a good idea, listen to them, and use it if you can. ”
Xiaoli also shared some insights about treating team members with us as a restaurant manager.

“Manage staff is different. You may encounter scenarios like stuff not showing up today or they are doing things slowly, you need to learn how to utilize people’s strengths. Leave one eye open and one eye closed and not being too straightforward is a good skill to help you manage the restaurant.
Communication is also very crucial between me and all the staff. After all, we all need to learn. For me, I never mention to my team I am the manager, I don’t use the title. If you want your team to follow the procedure, treat them friendly and make them feel like the whole team as a family. ”
Xiaoli always thinks out of the box and has new ideas about future goals. One of the bars she is managing is called Mirra Bar, which is a non-alcoholic and desserts bar perfect for companies hosting events such as International Women’s Day or to have an indulging high tea.
“The non-alcoholic idea for a bar is a pretty new trend in Australia. Being the first non-alcoholic bar in Adelaide is a good and even scary adventure for us to start. ”
