How to find a job in Adelaide

If you’re going to begin your career in Adelaide, you made a good choice.

In fact, Adelaide is Australia’s most liveable city and the third most liveable city in the world. according to The Economist’s Global Liveability Index for 2021.

According to the monthly Labour Force Survey conducted by ABS, the unemployment rate decreased to 4.2% and the employment rate increased to 63.3% in December 2021.

The competition amongst the job finders should not be underestimated.  Here are some insights about the job hunt.

Make sure to give your contact information

Before you apply for a job, it’s very important to understand the job requirements and job content. You need to make sure to put your name, email address, LinkedIn link and even your social media accounts on your resume once you decided to apply. You don’t have to put your exact address anymore; you can add the suburb and postcode instead.

Resume and Cover letter are the stepping-stones to finding a job

Present your work experience first then your education experience. This is because many employers and recruiters will focus on the work experience when they open the resume and good work experiences will always attract their eyes at the first glance.

If you don’t have any work experience, try to find one during your study. You can even participate in a volunteer job or an internship to gain some experience.

Adding your internship and volunteer experience to your resume will leverage the resume quality:

A plain resume that only represents education experience might not gain the attention of an employer. However, even if you don’t have any work experience, you can still put relevant experience on your resume which can include your achievements and activities.

Remember to use different resumes and cover letters to apply for different positions. You can create different resumes and cover letters according to the job requirements and details of the position. Always remember to check if there are any mistakes before you send the resume and cover letter.

Alliance College offers resume and cover letter workshops to all new students. We also have our own resume and cover letter templates specially designed for our students by an HR Consultant. If you’re not an Alliance College student, you can find resume/cover letter templates on the following websites:

Your resume gets you an interview, your interview gets you a job

Before the interview, you can prepare yourself by going on the company’s website and learning everything about it. You can even find their social media accounts if they have any. It’s always important to find out what they do and understanding the role you’re applying for.

During the interview, present yourself with a genuine attitude. To make a good impression, good body language always helps. For example, direct eye contact during the interview is better than looking at the floor.

There are interview questions always asked by the employer:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What motivates you?
  • What do you see as your strengths?
  • What accomplishments are you particularly proud of?
  • What are your biggest weaknesses?

Being fully prepared for these questions before the job interview will show your professionalism and help you show more confidence.

Trial for hospitality workers

When you try to apply for a hospitality or retail job, it is possible that you will be asked to come in for a trial shift. This is to see whether you are the right one to fit the role. You may be paid 2 hours maximum.

However, an unpaid trial shift can be legal if you are being supervised, and the trial should only last as long as it takes to show you know how to do the job. Any period beyond what is reasonably required to demonstrate the skills required for the job must be paid at the appropriate minimum rate of pay.

Talk to experienced classmates and friends

Always find a way to communicate with your classmates and friends who are already in the industry, they might give you some tips that are beneficial for the job application and interview.

Alliance College also offers employment consultancy for our students, as we have several industry partners in Adelaide and Sydney.
