Course Overview

Disability Skill Set is for people working in various care and support roles in the community services industry who wish to develop the skills necessary to support people with a disability.
This Skill Set reflects the skill requirements for providing person-centred support to people with disability in various settings.
Gain the skills and knowledge to assist with the ongoing skill development of a person with a disability. Learn how to assist with supporting people with a disability in community participation and social inclusion using a person-centred approach. Develop skills to facilitate the empowerment of people with a disability and implement behaviour support strategies outlined in individualised behaviour support plans. Upon successful completion, participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment by Alliance College (RTO: 0137) for the units of competency completed.

Availability: Domestic Students. This course can be subsidised through the Government of South Australia’s Subsidised training.

Workplace Participation Requirements: Some units of competency must be assessed in a real workplace environment. Students may be required to provide evidence of workplace participation (e.g. workplace records) if they are currently employed in the relevant industry. Where this is not available, work placement arrangements may be required to support assessment and completion of these units.

Entry Requirements

Minimum age: 16 years
Academic: Completion of Year 10 or equivalent OR AQF Level 1
Participate in a suitability interview including a pre-Training LLND (Digital Literacy) assessment.

For students seeking government funding under South Australia's Funded Activities Agreement (FAA):

Must meet Skills SA funding eligibility criteria (e.g. residency, visa status, previous education)
Must complete the Upfront Assessment of Need (UAN) process, which includes:
- A validated Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) assessment to determine language, literacy, and numeracy skill levels
- Any additional indicators that may help identify the need for learning support

Further Study Pathways

Students may progress to:

CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability specialisations)

Plus: 120 hours of work placement in an approved care setting

Units from this skill set can contribute credit towards the full qualifications, allowing a smooth transition for those seeking broader employment outcomes or higher responsibilities.
