Course Overview
This skill set is designed for individuals seeking to provide high-quality, person-centred care to older people in home and community settings. Students will develop the practical skills and knowledge to support the wellbeing, independence, and social participation of older people, working within the scope of an established individualised plan. This program equips students to deliver safe, ethical, and empathetic care while responding to the unique needs of each individual. Upon successful completion, participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment by Alliance College (RTO: 0137) for the units of competency completed.

- Delivery: On-campus, face-to-face training
- Availability: Domestic Students. This course can be subsidised through the Government of South Australia’s Subsidised training.
- Subsidised Fee: $280 AUD
- Concession Price: $280 AUD
- Incidental Fee: NIL
- Workplace Participation Requirements: Some units of competency must be assessed in a real workplace environment. Students may be required to provide evidence of workplace participation (e.g. workplace records) if they are currently employed in the relevant industry. Where this is not available, work placement arrangements may be required to support assessment and completion of these units.
Course Units
This skill set consists of the following nationally recognised units of competency:
Provide support to people living with dementia
Work effectively in aged care
Provide individualised support
Support relationships with career and family
Visit client residence
Facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support
Deliver care services using a palliative approach
Entry Requirements
- Minimum age: 16 years
- Academic: Completion of Year 10 or equivalent OR AQF Level 1
- Participate in a suitability interview including a pre-Training LLND (Digital Literacy) assessment.
- Must meet Skills SA funding eligibility criteria (e.g. residency, visa status, previous education)
- Must complete the Upfront Assessment of Need (UAN) process, which includes:
- A validated Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) assessment to determine language, literacy, and numeracy skill levels
- Any additional indicators that may help identify the need for learning support
Learning Outcomes
By completing this course, students will learn how to:
Learn to provide care that supports independence and wellbeing for older people.
Assist older individuals at home and in the community following their personalised care plans.
Help older people stay socially active and engaged in their community.
Work safely and professionally while communicating effectively with clients and colleagues.
Recognise and respond to the needs of older people with respect, empathy, and understanding.

- Employers may require additional qualifications (e.g., Certificate III in Individual Support) depending on the role and setting (e.g., residential aged care vs. home care).
- The skill set provides credit towards full qualifications, which may be required for broader career progression.
Further Study Pathways
Students may progress to:
- CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability or Ageing, or Home and Community specialisations)
- Remaining units to complete CHC33021: 11 units (including core and electives)
- Plus: 120 hours of work placement in an approved care setting
- CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support
- CHC42021 Certificate IV in Community Services
