Student Stories: How I Opened My Own Restaurant During COVID-19 After Being a Student in Australia (Part 2)
Meet one of our graduates Svitlana Kushlak. She is the owner of Henley Breeze Cafe, in Henley Beach.
Svitlana is from Italy and has completed a Diploma in Hospitality at Alliance College, where she gained not only professional knowledge but also communication skills in English. Right after she finished the course, she opened her own restaurant in Henley Beach, South Australia.
When she was working for two restaurants while studying Hospitality, she said she had thoughts about how she would improve things, how she would manage a restaurant, how she would serve customers in the way she wanted, and what food she would sell. That’s when she decided to open her own place.
“I really enjoyed being a student at Alliance College and learned from basic skills to professional skills. I gained different knowledge such as coffee types in Australia, safety requirements, computer skills, and how to manage restaurants. I was shy to talk to customers, but after practising in class, my customer service skills have improved a lot.”
Svitlana said there’re a lot of challenges in opening a restaurant, and that she had to take risks, especially with the COVID-19 situation.
“It was a big challenge for me to invest money without knowing if it would be worth it or not. It took a long time for people to get know us and to attract new customers. But once they knew us, they kept coming back!”
